Top Reasons Why Pets Should Live Indoors

Why do we acquire pets? Is it for their companionship, their unconditional love, or to make them a member of our families? Consider the definition of a pet:

1. A domesticated animal kept for pleasure or companionship rather than utility
2. An object of the affections
3. A person especially loved or indulged; a favorite

Based on the above definition of a pet, it's all these reasons and so much more! But what about the pet's needs? Are we concerned with or prepared for what it takes to love and protect a defenseless pet? There is no definition for the term "outdoor pet", just as there is no breed describing an "outdoor dog or outdoor cat". A pet as it is defined above, is not meant to live a life of solitude relegated to the outdoors day in and day out! In fact, pets tend to live shorter lives when bound to the outdoors. This is especially true for cats.

A cat that lives his entire life outdoors has a life expectancy of three years or less. Compare that to the cat that lives inside and may live 10 – 14 years or more with good health. Beside constant exposure to the elements, a cat is vulnerable to other dangers as well. Because they are not as easily confined outdoors as a dog is, cats are subject to injury and disease from other animals or abuse from people.

Dogs that are confined outdoors become lonely and bored. A lonely dog can ever become unhappy, unruly, or destructive. This happens because his emotional and physical needs are being neglected. These types of living conditions can make a dog anxious and aggressive. Many of these pets end up being surrendered to Shelters because their behavior becomes intolerable.

Pets that live their lives outdoor require more food than indoor pets. The extra nutrition is needed to protect them from the elements, especially during the cold, winter months. As these pets age, chronic pain can become an issue as age-related conditions such as arthritis, are made even worse by harsh outside conditions and sleeping on hard surfaces.

Our pets need the companionship, love, and attention of their human families to live happy and healthy lives. They are completely dependent on us for all their needs, physical and emotional. Is it mere coincidence that we share some of these same needs and that those needs become the very reasons we seek the companionship of a pet in the first place? Not corresponding to our definition of a pet.

11 Reasons Why Dogs Bark and How You Can Stop Dog Barking

11 Reasons Why Dogs Bark and How You Can Stop Dog Barking

It is as natural for a dog to bark as it is for a kid to talk. So we should not expect a dog never to bark. However if the barking has become too excessive to the point of irritating the neighbours, you have to either move the dog away from build-up areas, confine it to a sound proof room or train the dog to stop barking. To stop the dog from barking, we have to first understand the cause of the problem.

REASONS FOR DOG BARKING

Let us explore the reasons for dog barking:

#1. Communication

Barking is a form of communication. If you listen closely there are different tones and different types of barking.

#2. Intrusion

Dogs are territorial and protective against any intruders. A guard dog’s duty is to guard the property. Naturally it will bark to alert you to possible intruders when it sense any intrusion by people or dogs. The closer the threat, the louder the barking. When the dog is aggressive, it takes on a threatening posture, with a high tail and ears up and forward.

#3. Spirits

Some people say that animals are sensitive to the presence of unseen spirits or ghosts.

#4. Reaction to Noise

Some dogs bark when car drives by, when the doorbell rings, or when the neigbour’s dog bark.

#5. Attention

Dogs bark because they want attention. They want something.Maybe they are hungry or thirsty. They want to go outside to play. They wants a treat.

#6. Boredom

Dogs can be frustrated if they are confined to the same place for a long period of time, or they have been left outside day and night. Dogs are pack dog and do not like to be left alone for long period. If they become bored or sad, they will bark.

#7. Fear

They bark when they are afraid, be it objects, people, places, other animals, or loud noise such as thunder and fireworks. How do you tell if the dog is afraid? The ears are back and the tails are held low.

#8. Excitement

Dogs can be playful and excited when greeting people or other animals. It’s usually a happy bark, accompanied with tail wags and sometimes jumping.

#9. Health Problem

We should not discount that barking can be cause by deafness because it cannot hear itself barking. It could be due to age related dementia.

#10. Separation Anxiety

Dogs when left alone can suffer from separation anxiety. They exhibit symptoms such as pacing, depression and destruction.

#11. Compulsive barking

Compulsive barkers bark just to hear the sound of their voices. They also often make repetitive movements as well such as running in circles.

HOW TO STOP DOG BARKING

It is a natural instinct for a dog to bark and we should not suppress this instinct.

The dog must be taught when to bark and when not to bark. When the dog bark for a good reason, for example someone is at the door or entering your territory, praise the dog. When you let the guest enter your house, you give the dog a command to stop barking.

Put your finger to your lips and give the command “Quiet” in a calm and firm voice.

Train your dog to understand the word ‘Quiet’.

However, if the dog barks at the wrong time or for the wrong reason, then we should not let this problem continue. A dog barking become unwelcome when the dog will not stop barking and such incessant barking disturb the neighbours especially in build up areas.

To solve the problem, find out what is the cause of the problem.

If the barking is due to boredom then bring the dog out for a work every day. Play with it for at least an hour a day. If the barking is for the attention, then give it sufficient attention by spending time with it. A dog is not a toy to be left alone; it is a living animal with feelings and need affection and interaction. Spend time by taking it for a long walk or run. Play ball. Take a trip to the dog park. When the dog is tired, it will be quiet.

Do send the dog to a vet for a checkup as some medical problems can cause excessive barking. These problem can range from dementia, brain disease, pain, to senility.

There are a few methods to solve a dog barking problem.

Someone suggested a beans-in-a-tin solution. Put beans in a tin and seal it. When the dog is barking, shake the tin vigorously near the dog and say ‘No’ firmly.

As soon as the dog stops barking, praise him.

If you want the fast and effective way of stopping the dog from barking, let Harry Quek show you the Koehler method in his personal dog training program.

5 Reasons to Use Implantable RFID on Your Pet

How many times have you seen a "Lost Pet" poster in your neighborhood? Some pets and breeds do not respond when called, or recognize their territory is limited to your house or yard. Losing a pet is can be a tragic and stressful experience.

But, due to advances in radio frequency technology, this risk can be easily prevented. A veterinarian can now implant a completely harmless RFID tracking tag safely beneath the animal's skin. Although the technology is fairly new, many pet owners are already opting to protect their pets with Implantable RFID devices.

In fact, The Iams Co., routinely pledges to donate wireless RFID scanners to animal shelters that pick up unidentified animals. This enables Shelters to identify RFID implanted pets and contact their owners, or begin the often fruitless task of holding the animal until it is claimed. Often less than 15% of lost dogs and cats are ever returned to their home.

Give yourself peace of mind that you'll never lose your beloved pet. Have your animal tagged with an RFID device. Here are 5 reasons to use implantable RFID tagging on your pet.

1. No Adverse Effects

The RFID tag is about the size of a grain of rice. It's inserted quickly and easily underneath your pet's skin with a hypodermic needle, completely without sedation. The tag is encased in a special coating that will not irritate the tissue. In fact the casing is made of a special material that allows the tissue to grow around the tag and bond with it in the same way that an ear piercing heals.

Radio-frequency beams communicate with a scanner through the epidermal layers of the skin. Your pet will experience no more pain or irritation than they would from a standard vaccination.

2. Low Cost

The cost of the RFID chip is around $ 50, with some additional costs for embedding the tag and programming the owner ID database. That $ 50 is a small price to pay for the peace of mind you will have know that if your dog or cat ever turns up missing, it's only a matter of time before he or she is returned.

3. Better than a Collar

Even if your pet wears a collar or harness, an RFID tag is still a far more secure method of identifying your dog. In the wild, collars are easily snagged on things and torn or slipped off. Due to their implantable nature, RFID tags are guaranteed never to come off. As you may have assumed, they're completely weatherproof as well.

4. RFID Tags Transmit Vet Info

Not to scare you, but should your pet get lost and suffer an accident, they may not get medical attention before it's too late. Implantable RFID tags assist with this as well. The tag transmits to a scanner a unique ID code, the pet's name, breed, owner's info, and veterinary info. With the veterinary info, anyone can retrieve the pet's medical records ensuring that they get proper care in time.

5. Managing Livestock

For those of you who keep animals for commercial uses can very benefit from RFID tagging. The tags allow you to quickly identify animals and manage herds. Since the outbreak of mad-cow disease, this has been a critical component of managing and protecting your investment.

Cat Biting – 4 Reasons Why Cats Will Bite You

Cat Biting – 4 Reasons Why Cats Will Bite You

Cat biting is a common behavioral problem some owners have to deal with. This can be very upsetting for some cat owners and can even be a dangerous situation. Here are 4 reasons why cats bite.

1. The cat is injured, sick, or in pain. Cats that are suddenly more aggressive, might be trying to cover for the fact that they are sick or injured. It is a natural reaction in the animal kingdom to cover any trace of weakness. Animals that appear injured in the wild are easy prey for larger animals.

2. The cat is fearful of something. A fear response in a cat will cause biting and scratching. Anyone who has tried to carry a cat past a barking dog will know what this is like. If your cat is acting fearful it is best to confine it until they can calm down.

3. Redirected aggression. Sometimes cats will redirect their aggression toward you. This could be caused by stray cats hanging around outside the window. Another possible cause of this is boredom. Some cats have a lot of built up energy and not enough outlets to release this energy so they will often start biting your toes.

4. Play biting. Sometimes kittens that are orphaned or separated from their litter too soon will not understand how to play properly. Kittens learn to guard their teeth and claws with playing with other kittens as to not harm them. If they do not have this opportunity they may harm you during play and not even realize it, which leads to adult cat biting problems.

Eight Compelling Reasons Why We Should All Have a Hobby

Eight Compelling Reasons Why We Should All Have a Hobby

A while ago I came across an article that talked about the worrying trend of adults collecting stickers for sticker collections. The word 'worried' stuck me. Worrying is all those other terrible things adults do every day causing harm to themselves, others and the planet. Collecting stickers is not worried. I've talked before about adults engaging in playtime so will not go on about it here. My point is as adults it's okay to do the things we enjoy – hey is not life stressful enough?

Hobbies are a way of filling your leisure time with something you are interested in. The great thing about them is you can choose what you do. They are for your enjoyment and satisfaction. Whatever it is bird watching, playing soccer, collecting stamps, dancing, singing, there are a multitude of activities out there. They are perfect opportunities to express your creativity, curiosity, competitive nature, love of beauty and so much more. You may do it outside, inside, alone or with others. It does not matter what you do as long as you have chosen it and you enjoy it. Do not give a damn about what other people think – this is for you after all.

In this article I want to talk about some of the very good reasons why we should all have a hobby. Hopefully they will spur you on every week or even every day to take up a hobby, resume an old one or ramp up an existing passion.

1 Gives your life meaning and purpose
Having a hobby gives you a sense of purpose. It ensures you have something to live for, look forward to and get excited by. You do not have to wait for a grand once-in-a-lifetime vacation to get this feeling. You can have it every day just through your hobby. Obviously it would be nice if your job gave you meaning. Maybe it does. But for some, the lack of control may make it harder. However, with a hobby that you have chosen you are consciously and actively creating meaning in your life. There's even better news. Recent research has shown that people with a sense of purpose live longer. Hobbies are an opportunity for you to set yourself goals and then use your free time to achieve them. Your time is spent on something that is important to you. By taking up a hobby, suddenly your life has a direction it may not have had previously.

2 Managing stress
Life can be super stressful. We have so many demands and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. However if you have a pastime you can turn to during difficult times you will be doing wonders for your health. Because too much stress leads to physical changes in the body that can cause long term harm. For some, it may be worth choosing a hobby that gives your life more balance. If you spend your days in an office in silence, then it may pay to engage in something fairly social. Or if you unfortunately need quiet me-time, then go for it. The point is your hobby should be fun and certainly not add to your stress. Let your hobby work for you.

3 Living in the moment
How often are any of us actually in the moment? So many of us worry about the things that we have to get done in a day. We're doing one thing, while thinking about what we have to do next. Or we spend our time living for the weekend or a vacation, taking no notice of the present. Then there's those people who ruminate over the past – so tied up with thoughts and worries about things that have happened, they are barely aware of their current situation. Having a hobby that you set aside time for can allow you to be worry free and just focus on the here and now. Allow yourself to be immersed in the activity will do wonders for your wellbeing. The next tip will help you do just that.

4 Good opportunity for a flow experience
A flow experience is one of those moments when you are so immersed in an activity that everything else is forgotten. Have you ever been so focused on something that you do not even notice how hungry you are until you have finished the task? It is likely you were experiencing flow. Experiencing flow can do wonders to your happiness as you are attending to something that is giving you value and offers a great feeling of achievement.

To increase your chances of flow whilst engaging in a hobby, it is worth choosing a hobby that meets the following conditions for flow. Firstly you should have a goal. It directs your attention as appropriate. What do you hope to achieve with your choice of hobby? Goals can be ongoing, short term and long term. Secondly you should have a good balance between your perceived skills and perceived challenges. Do not take up a hobby that is so beyond your skill set you get frustrated. Saying that, you want it to engage you so you do not become bored. If you find yourself doing the same thing over and over, what can you do to increase the challenge? Finally, it is important to obtain feedback. How are you doing with your hobby? You can ask yourself this question or gauge the opinion of another who you trust to be fair.

5 Being active in life
Using your leisure time well by having a hobby means you are being active in your life and engaged. You are not letting life pass you by. Passive activities like watching TV are not hobbies and do little for your wellbeing. Another problematic activity is spectator sport. Just watching a sport does little for your happiness and you are not actively involved (no matter how much you think you are as you shout at the opposing team or the ref). However, if you do enjoy a particular sport, there are ways to become actively involved with it – perhaps by playing or teaching the sport, or being involved with supporters clubs.

6 Get to make friends
Having an interest is a great opportunity to get to know other people. Whatever your hobby is, you will find plenty of other people doing the same. This can be especially useful as a beginner where you are keen to learn everything about your new hobby from those more experienced. Of course, some hobbies and interests would require that you get to know other people. Perhaps you decide it's time to dust off your football boots and join a team. You love football – and being in a team means you immediately get to know many other people with a shared interest. Friendships are important and there is research that shows having social support can help you live longer.

Remember also, the internet can be a great source of support and it is not uncommon for people to make friends this way. As you get started on your hobby, take a look at related blogs, forums and Facebook pages.

7 Something just for you
Even if you get just a few hours a week to get stuck into your hobby – this is your time. You do not have to worry about work, family, friends, anyone. We all have so many obligations and responsibilities. There is nothing wrong with having me-time. It is essential to manage stress. If you believe you do not have time for a hobby then you need to do a quick assessment of your life. It's all about balance. Hopefully by now you are convinced of the value of having a hobby.

8 Feeling of achievement
With a hobby you can set goals – both long term and short term. This will give you an ongoing feeling of achievement that you have total control over. It feels good to achieve things. You feel you have made good use of your time. You may even like to keep a journal or even a blog that records your achievements for you to look back over. It's amazing how quickly things can build up – even if you only commit a small amount of time each week to your hobby.

Remember though, whatever hobby you do – it's for you so should be something you enjoy or think you might enjoy. Do not be afraid to try new things or expand your existing skills. And have fun!

5 Reasons To Try Electric RC Helicopters

5 Reasons To Try Electric RC Helicopters

RC Helicopters capture people's interest since their very first inception. They stand as one of the most fascinating field of the RC hobby world. Very few can resist its charm. Neverless, not too long ago they also rented an extremely heavy price tag and required more maintenance than a ten-years-old car. To make matters worse, flying one required countless hours of practice and tremendous amount of patience. However, all that is about to change. With the introduction of electric RC helicopters, flying these amazing models are not as far-fetched as they used to be. Here are five reasons why:

1. Low Cost:

Flying RC Helicopter used to set people back thousands of dollars. People had to buy the helicopter kit (which comes in a hundred small pieces – unassembled), servos, engine, starter, gyro, receiver, radio controller, a hundred other equipments, and of course – fuel. When everything has been purchased, you still have to assemble it!

On the other hand, electric helicopters almost always cost less than 200 dollars with cheaper but better versions coming out regularly. Even better, most of these helicopters come ready to fly right out of the box. In addition to that, every necessary equipments and accessories often come included as well. Finally, by using batteries, the running cost of these helicopters is greatly reduced as it is no longer necessary to buy gallons after gallons of gas.

2. Silent and Clean:

RC Helicopters might be among the most fascinating radio controlled models, however, one undeniable fact still stands against it; they make more noise and create more pollution than a breaking down truck. This makes flying around the neighborhood almost impossible.

The problem of noise, pollution and size is almost entirely eliminated with the electric models; the amount of noise greatly decreased while the amount of pollution vanished alike. These two facts allows these machines to fly everywhere without causing too much annoyance to other people.

3. Reliable and Easy to Fly:

With gas helicopters, countless crashes occur not because of pilot errors, but because the engine fail in midair. Who's to blame? After all, everyone knows that gas engines are not the most reliable thing in the world. They also notoriously require constant tinkering to run smoothly. On the other hand, electric helicopters fly undeniably more reliable. They almost never cut out in mid air, even when the battery runs down. Moreover, you can forget about having to crank up the engine over and over. These electric motors will run anytime anywhere as long as there's battery. There's nothing more frustrating than taking your helicopter to the field only to find that it will not start because it is too cold, too humid, or just because the engine wants to act up.

Electric helicopter are generally easier to fly than gas models, making them ideal for beginners. Some model allows beginner to start out with only 2 or 3 channels to worry about as oppose to 6 or 7 that the gas model requires. Avid pilots will not have to worry though, as professional fully 3D-capable electric models also exist.

4. Easy to Maintain:

Maintenance used to be one of the largest hurdles for anyone wanting to start flying RC helicopters. Thankfully, electric RC helicopters dramatically reduced the amount of repairs required. These little wonders were specifically designed to keep the amount of fixing necessary to minimum. Therefore, repairs can usually be made with just the bare hands or with only one screw driver. Even more impressive is the fact that these types of helicopter rarely need repairing at all. They can survive most types of crashes without any problem.

5. Small Size:

Before electric helicopters, indoor flights and flights in your own backyard were next to impossible. Now, they are quick and easy. Newer versions are so small that even flying in the bedroom is possible. The smaller size of these helicopter means that it is easier to transport as well. However, for pilots who prefer big aircraft, there are electric helicopters as big as.50 size gas models available.

The advantage of flying electric RC helicopter does not end with these five points. With new technologies becoming available, these aircraft are improving at surprising speed. All in all, it is not hard to see why electric RC helicopter is the fastest growing field of RC hobby.

4 Reasons Why Robots Will not Be Replacing Human Security Guards Anytime Soon

4 Reasons Why Robots Will not Be Replacing Human Security Guards Anytime Soon

You've got a busy day planned. You jump in your car, tell it to take you to your office, open your email from the car's iPad and tell the car to call your first client. After your car pulls into your parking space, you walk to your building door and it automatically opens after recognizing your face. You get to your office, sit down at your desk and your personal assistant rolls in and hands you a cup of coffee with two creams and one sugar just the way you like it. Your assistant then retreats to the back of the office with all the other personal assistants and connections to its charging station.

Sound like the typical start to your day? Not in 2017. Wishful thinking but artificial intelligence and machine learning certainly has not evolved to that point. Your personal assistant may not be replaced by a robot anytime soon and neither will security guards at your office building. We often think of robots as characters from movies like Star Wars or humanoids designed to take over the world. Although we can not hide our heads in the sand and pretend that technology is not advancing in almost every area of our lives, here are four reasons why robots will not be replacing human security guards anytime soon:

  1. Humans Still Write Software and Program Robots

People do the programming and develop the algorithms for robots no matter how sophisticated and advanced we believe robots to be. They only solve problems and perform actions that their software and algorithms allow them to do. Contrary to popular belief with all the buzz about advances in artificial intelligence and deep learning, robots do not think for themselves. They're built to solve a specific problem and are not equipped with generalized intelligence.

For example, programmed robots use their sensors to receive information about a situation, process that information by searching through their pre-programmed databases, select the best action based on the data, and carry out the selected action. Robots on a car assembly line in an auto manufacturing plant come to mind or the robotic arm on the space shuttle that's controlled by human input. However, other robots perform differently than pre-programmed ones. Robots that run artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms can learn to recognize and repeat a certain action that was successfully executed the first time by storing that information and searching for it to produce the same output again. Ultimately, the task of writing software and algorithms is performed by humans.

  1. Security Guards Do More Than Patrol Offices and Malls

Have you ever been in a situation where you know deep down that something just does not feel right? Some people would call that intuition or "trusting your gut instinct." Machines have not been able to replicate such a complex emotion. Security guards are faced with situations where they need to trust that feeling and may have to make a quick decision. That decision could make the difference between life or death.

Security guards are often first responders to emergencies. Guards are trained to keep order, help people stay calm, reassure them, and take charge in difficult situations. It's tough to imagine a robot making people feel safe and secure in the evacuation of an office building or terrorist attack. Cobalt Robotics has developed an indoor security robot that patrols office space, but in emergency situations trained employees at Cobalt Robotics take control of the situation, not the robot.

Human intelligence and emotions are so complicated. Robots do not have rationale, can not be made accountable for their actions, and can not relay the finite details of a story or something they've seen that could be cruel to an investigation.

Many guards are employed to provide personal protection services to executives and VIPs. These guards know how to think fast on their feet and change the game plan at a moment's notice to keep the person safe they've been hired to protect. They pre-plan escape routes within buildings and participate in overall security planning for their client. Would you trust a robot to protect your life no matter how many updated algorithms it had in its CPU? Not at this point in time. And when it comes to offering that "warm and fuzzy" feeling, robots just do not make the grade.

  1. Robots Have Limited Capabilities

When it comes to running after perpetrators, squeezing into small spaces, making judgment calls, and arresting people, robots have a long way to go. Their capabilities are limited. Take for example Knightscope's security robots. They report suspicious activity in a similar way as Cobalt Robots, and again, humans respond at the control center and do the investigating. In fact, in July of this year, one of Knightscope's robots took a little dip in a fountain outside of a DC office building according to The Washington Post . While it was patrolling it fell down some stairs and right into a fountain. Humans had to rescue it from the water. We can only speculate that its sensors could not identify stairs. The poor robot could not explain why it fell into the fountain. On the other hand, if human security guards make mistakes, they're required to explain why and what happened and are held accountable for not performing their duties.

  1. Robots Could Assist NOT Replace Human Security Guards

Robotic technology is here to stay and continuing to advance into many areas of our lives. Fearing technology could pose a serious problem in the future. We can choose to work together with the advances in technology or fight them. Working together would seem like a better option. The security industry itself could be presented with some new and challenging tasks for security personnel to learn. Security guards could have trained to maintain their robot counterparts, learn how to operate them and earn better wages. Employee turnover could decrease because of potentially higher wages and an increase in technical responsibility. An increased skill set for guards could translate to more people pursuing a career in security services.

Security guards should not fear that they'll lose their jobs to robots anytime soon. Robots may be able to enhance not replace the tasks performed by security guards who do a lot more than just patrol office buildings, halls and parking lots. Robots and machines have their place in society – to work alongside human animals to make our lives easier.
