7 Questions to Ask Before Installing a Home Security Camera

Home security cameras have become an interesting option to add onto a home security system. Business have for years used surveillance cameras to monitor the promotions. As the technology has evolved and prices have come down, they have become more feature rich and affordable. But, before you go out and purchase a set home security cameras there are a few questions that you need to ask yourself.

Do you want to hear as what you are seeing?

There are security cameras on the market that have a built in microphone. These cameras are really good as 'nanny cams' as you get to hear and see what is going on.

Do you want to store the images taken by the camera?

It really depends on what you are trying to accomplish with the security camera. If you want to know who is at the front door, do you really need to preserve the video images? No, not really. If you know someone has been using your hot tub while you're a work, then you need to have the images stored so that you can identify who it is.

When it comes to storing the video there are two basic options you have available to you tape or hard drive. Video tape recording systems are inexpensive and quite reliable. Storing digital video on a hard drive allows for easier editing and searching of the video, but video can consume a lot of disk space.

Wireless any one?

You now have the choice of installing a wired or wireless camera. The camera will still need to be plugged into an outlet for electricity; however, you do not have to pull a video cable for the camera to work. Wireless cameras are easier to interface with a home security computer system that will allow you to monitor and record the video.

Is the location bright enough for the camera?

There needs to be enough light for the camera to capture a clear image. If it is too dark or the sun is shining into the camera's lens, you will not get a good image. Every camera has a lux rating. The lower the lux value the better the camera can function in low light situations.

Will there be a way to get electricity to the cameras?

Some cameras plug into the wall and use electricity for power while others use a battery power. As a rule there is not an abundance of power outlet on the roofline outdoors.

Do you want to remotely view what your security cameras are recording?

When the security cameras a hooked up to a home security computer and that computer is connected to the Internet, it becomes possible that you can use a web browser connect to your home computer and view the video footage being recorded by your security cameras. There is some software that needs to be installed and configurations to your computer need to be made to support this.

How many cameras do you think you will need?

You will have to check with your monitoring system for your home security system. Some of the systems can only accommodate two or three cameras. You will need to match your system to the number of security cameras that you will be installing. It might not be a bad idea to plan ahead and buy a system that can accommodate more cameras that what you are planning on installing, room for future expansion.

There you have it. The top 7 questions you need to ask yourself before purchasing and installing a home security camera.

Is it Possible to Build Your Own Security Camera?

Keeping your home, possessions, and most importantly, your family, safe is a very important thing to do. One of the best ways to do this is to install a video surveillance system which will allow you to keep an eye on things, even when you're not there. However, it can be extremely costly to purchase a security camera system and have it installed in your home. That's why you are going to learn in this article whether it is possible to build your own security camera or not.

To cut a long story short, yes you can build your own security camera. In fact, you will be amazed to learn that this is not a particularly difficult process at all. You can put together your own video surveillance system using nothing more complex than a webcam and a computer.

However, this system will also be powerful enough to be able to be securely and remotely monitored from any computer in the world with an Internet connection, and even from mobile phone in some countries.

The promise is rather simple when it comes to making your own security camera using a webcam and computer. Basically, you set up your webcam in whatever position you feel will give you area of surveillance that you want. Next, you connect your camera to a computer (any computer will do)

Using camera surveillance software you can then set up an account which will allow you to securely and securely check the video feed from the webcam from any computer in the world with Internet access, or even from certain areas with advanced cellphone networks.

The benefits of building your own security camera instead of merely purchasing one and having it installed are quite appealing. Firstly, you will save large sums of money; a purchased system will cost you upwards of $ 400, whereas you can make your own for less than $ 100. A saving of at least $ 300 is not to be missed!

Secondly, you have a greater level of control over where your system will be installed as you are doing it yourself. Because you are using a webcam instead of a fixed camera you can move it around very easily too if you need to change whereabouts in your home, business or property you have the highest level of surveillance.

Make Your Own Wireless Home Security Camera System

You do not have to spend hundreds, possibly even thousands of dollars on an expensive home surveillance camera setup, Instead, today you are going to learn how to make your own wireless home security camera system using a webcam and a computer; it will cost you less than $ 100 in total to set up, and you can even check it from a mobile phone so you can have 24/7 surveillance in your home.

To make a wireless home security camera system, the most basic component is the camera itself. This is like your "eye", watching over whatever you need to keep track of or be able to look at when your not at home. Security cameras of a good quality are extremely expensive and difficult to fit, while cheaper models tend to be bulky and die quickly.

Therefore, a good solution is to actually use a webcam in place of a conventional camera. Now this may sound silly, but it is actually a good solution for three reasons. Firstly, webcams are small and a very covert way to operate a home security system; nobody would ever suspect a webcam as being a security camera. Secondly, they are cheap and you can purchase a good one for less than $ 50 online. Finally, modern webcams offer excellent picture quality, often far surpassing that of professional surveillance systems.

Basically, you set up your webcam in whatever position you want, then attach it to your computer (there are even wireless webcams available these days if you want a 100% wireless system) Then, using video surveillance software you can monitor your webcam's live feed secretly from any computer in the world, or even better, monitor it from a cell phone. Setting up a wireless home security camera system is frankly not that difficult and can be done in under one hour.

Nikon Coolpix S1100pj Projector Camera

The new Coolpix S1100pj is definitely a big step up from its predecessor, the Coolpix S1000pj. It responds even better to the needs of users of projector-equipped digital cameras. The brightness is increased to an amazing 40%, so that the projection is larger and clearer. The results are impressive. Even in a not-so-dark room the images shown are crisper than expected.

Nikon has also decided to make the projection feature one-touch, which simplifies the camera somewhat. Alongside the sharper design comes tweaks to the camera's features. These include the addition of in-camera editing.

The chassis of the S1100pj is slimmer than you may think for a device which has a projector built in, and Nikon assures us that it has sacrificed none of the quality of the snaps the camera takes. In addition, there is a 3-inch TFT LCD touch panel monitor giving you a very easy to use camera.

The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj also supports the projection of computer data when connected to a computer, increasing the ways in which the built-in projector may be used for both personal and business application. The Coolpix S1100pj continues to offer the necessary camera functions for recording still images and movies. It is the model that proposes new ways to enjoy a digital camera with the ability to record and immediately share memories and lasting impressions anywhere and anytime.

The Coolpix S1100pj has a14.1 megapixel resolution lets you capture amazing detailed images. It has a NIKKOR wide angle 5 x optical zoom giving you the precision and sharp resolution you need. This digital camera offers many more exciting features and can definitely be classed as a high quality camera and not just another "cool looking gadget".

The S1100pj also introduces a range of retouch features so you can really get creative, including Fisheye effect, selective color highlighting on an otherwise monochrome picture, and background softening, so you do not have to go anywhere near a computer to edit your images. To liven up your slideshows you can use the built-in animations, background music or slide transitions. Finally, the Paint function means you can add handwritten annotations to your images, even while you are projecting them on a wall.

The Nikon S1100pj is capable of focusing as close as 1.2 inches (three centimeters) in macro mode, and includes both face detection and focus tracking capabilities.

Nikon have certainly done themselves proud with this model, It's a great innovation and definitely a handy and compact camera that will capture all of your memories. Certainly expect to see a huge interest from people when the Coolpix S1100pj is released mid-September. You will be spoiled for choice as it comes in four cool looking colors, I am definitely giving this the thumbs up and would advise anyone remotely interested in this type of camera to get in quick to avoid any disappointment.

There is already quite a lot of hype about this digital camera, and who am I to disagree with all the positive comments. It's definitely worth pre-ordering and you'll be pleased to know that it's actually $ 80 cheaper than the previous model, the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj.

Prevent Your Building From Any Infiltrators – Outdoor Surveillance Camera Help

You often get to hear about the vandal's wrath, destruction of cameras before they barge in to your office, house, show room or banks. How can you prevent this?

To prevent this, you need to install a modern outdoor surveillance camera in order to monitor what is happening outside the home. You must know what are the additional features you need to have in a security device so that the device is not subject to their vandalism. Make use of a dome shaped device such that it is not easily noticeable. It also offers a good interior as they come in different hues like a lamp shade. They look like dome shaped lights which conceal the actual security device. Is not it great?

There's more to this. You can possibly choose the one with advanced tinted glass. This hides the direction of the device and one will be left clueless about its focus angle. No infiltrator will be able to view the direction of the device and will get easily misled. You are smarter than an infiltrator, is not it?

The other factor you need to pay attention to is the weather conditions. Since you are installing this device outside, you must ensure that it meets the weather conditions. You may have to have a roof or have them under a shaded area. Remember that it should be placed where there is enough lighting or you should pick up one with inbuilt lighting in the device itself. Some even come with a wiper like your car wipers. They are suitable for rainy season too. Placing them near air ducts and vents will offer better visibility so making them free of fog, mist and its lens remains clear.

Place them in an elevated area such that no body notices it nor destroys it!

Be the Master of Your Digital Camera

A very popular hobby that many people have enjoyed and many more people are learning to enjoy is photography. Taking photos with your digital camera can prove to be very enjoyable. Some will carry their camera with them wherever they go so they do not miss taking that special photo while others do it as a part time or weekend job to supplement their income. Whatever your reason may be for getting into digital photography, there are some things you need to keep in mind when taking your pictures.

Before anything else, you must realize that you are the director and you will absolutely determine how a picture will turn out. Do not be shy in taking photos of people or climbing a little hill to get that perfect shot of the ocean beyond the trees. Let your creativity shine forth, and you will learn to appreciate your photos even more. Taking pictures with a preconceived notification of how pictures are provided to be taken is the wrong approach to take. With that in mind, however, there are some things that you do need to be aware of so your pictures will turn out right in the first place.

One thing that some beginner photographers have trouble with is working with the flash on the camera. The flash can be your best friend or your worst enemy. You need to learn how your camera uses the flash with each setting or scene mode that it has. The camera will use the flash differently when the scene mode is set at a nighttime setting as opposed to its automatic setting. Use natural lighting whenever possible, but make sure that the sun is lighting the object or person you want to take a picture of the proper way. Taking the picture with the sun directly behind or in front of your subject will cause your photo to become either underexposed or overexposed. When taking pictures at night, do not get too close to your subject unless you want it to turn out very, very bright.

Practice makes perfect, and one way to get that practice is to take many photos of the same object but at different angles, distances, and with or without the flash. If you want, you can keep notes of what the lighting conditions are, whether you used the flash or not, the camera scene mode you used, if any, and your distance from the object. That should give you a better understanding of what you should expect you to encounter a picture-taking moment with the same conditions in the future.

Keep in mind also that you will need to devote some time to get better at your photographic skills. With time, you will develop a sense for taking a picture and having it come out the way that you want it to.

Opposing Arguments to the Use of CCTV Security Camera Surveillance

As the use of CCTV cameras increases across the United States and globe, so does the debt over their numbers and motives. There are many arguments for video surveillance, including peace of mind, loss prevention, crime deterrence and crime solving, but what about the other side of the story? Thousand of individuals and groups oppose video surveillance, and many of them have extremely valid points. What are the consequences of allowing "Big Brother" access to our entire public life? Will that ever lead to the invasion of our private going-ons? When does it begin to be too much? The ACLU has an entranet Web site, You Are Being Watched, devoted to the "high costs of camera surveillance systems, both in terms of money and civil liberties," and that is just one example of a group that is taking action.

So, what are some of the main arguments against the use of CCTV surveillance systems? Lets see …

Invasion of Privacy – This is the most common argument against surveillance systems. No one likes the idea of being watched, but still we are starting to see security cameras on many more street corners and light poles. Cities normally justify these additions by saying they are monitoring and preventing crime, which is valid, but many people, both innocent and not, would rather the cameras not be there. While video surveillance is more commonly accepted in public areas, this sentiment comes into play more so with the use of covert and hidden cameras in private areas. Laws enforce restrictions in this arena, for now, but the main concern is the future of citizen privacy.

Mistrust – The use of security cameras in your home or business can make its occupants feel mistrusted. If your family members or employees are under constant surveillance, there is likely to be hostility and animosity in the air. Feeling like every move you make is monitored and recorded is not only creepy, but downright scary. Even the most trusted employees can become paranoid and nervous when a camera is pointing at their cubicle all day. No more dozing off, checking facebook, text messaging or doodling, you are being watched!

Not Proven Effective – Studies done in California and London have found that security cameras had little to no effect on reducing the crime rate. With an increase in the sheer number of cameras in many large cities, many replacing human security guards, this is a strong argument that will be the main target of many opposing groups. I think we can all agree that there is no replacement for a thinking, acting, problem solving human police officer or security guard, and if we begin to rely on cameras as pure deterrents, how do we plan on stopping crimes as they are happening?

Misuse and Abuse – The footage captured by CCTV cameras becomes intolerable to abuse and misuse by those who have access to it. For instance, the footage can be used to discriminate against people and for voyeurism. In the age of the Internet, this is another huge deal, as can be seen by all of the "hilarious" YouTube videos out there. I doubted the subjects would find most of them as funny. This obviously leads into the invasion of privacy issue, and is one of the primary concerns of activists. All it takes is one "funny guy" security guard to post footage or still images of an individual doing something embarrassing or that they should not be and reputations are ruined, privacy is obliterated and those that oppose CCTV will have more ammo.

All of these reasons are valid arguments against CCTV surveillance. There are many cities and countries that have massive surveillance systems, and we will likely see a large increase in public monitoring in the near future, so the more the public knows about the industry and their rights, etc, the more everyone can prepare for when It happens in your little corner of the globe.

Do you have any additional arguments against the use of security camera systems? What are your thoughts? Will you fight them or open your "public" life up willingly to being observed? Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts and opinions.

Choosing A Security Camera Recorder

Having a security camera recorder on your property isn’t a foolproof measure against crime, but it can help to dissuade criminals from breaking and entering. Security cameras put off thieves from attempting to break in from a psychological point of view because they don’t want to be caught on camera. Closed-circuit television acts as an excellent crime prevention measure suitable for both a business and private residence.

Some thieves may not consider the presence of security camera recorders a problem since they don’t increase the physical difficulty of breaking in. Other measures of security should be in place to stop criminals including; physical barriers such as fences and multiple locks on entrances.

While surveillance cameras may not stop a determined thief from breaking in, it may help to catch the thief or vandal. In addition, CCTV cameras have reported to decrease other crimes such as vandalism. Repeat crime can occur in inadequately protected establishments.

Unsurprisingly, victims of crime fear experiencing another episode. Catching perpetrators on CCTV can help police solve crime and catch criminals. The arrest of criminals can sometimes recover stolen items. So installing fake security cameras does not give you the benefits of catching criminals on camera.

While fake surveillance cameras can’t provide pertinent footage, they do still work as effective deterrents. They can be easily installed without a professional since they require no wiring. A fake surveillance camera might be ok for establishments that hold no valuables or important assets, but it isn’t sufficient for those that need that extra protection.

Many people who install CCTV cameras enjoy the advantage and security of being able to monitor their property from anywhere. You will find that there are a number of different manufacturers of security systems that offer various systems. Night vision cameras are available and a must for 24 hour surveillance. Most security cameras record in black and white, but there are color security systems available. For outdoor CCTV installation you need a camera that is weatherproof.

Security video cameras can be linked to a television or computer. Advanced security camera systems may offer multiple digital display and a built in alarm system. Other additions you can get are audio, body movement and heat detection and capture. More capable security systems offer better overall security.

The latest security camera systems offer wireless technology. Such systems offer wire-free installation, making it not only easier to install cameras but making it possible to install them practically anywhere. Moreover, whether you’re away or at work you can watch live feeds directly on a computer with Internet access.

This doesn’t mean you have to watch your security camera feeds for 24 hours. A lot of advanced security packages provide instant message alerts when motion or heat is detected. This is the next best thing to security personnel on the actual property.

Need a discreet mini-camera to spy on the kids to make sure they aren’t misbehaving? It’s possible to place small wireless cameras practically anywhere indoors without being noticed. A few mini systems come with small portable monitors. Good for worried parents who are leaving their kids at home.
